Street in Auburn, Maine, will honor the U.S. Merchant Marine as part of their upcoming Memorial Day service, set for
12:15 p.m., on Mon., May 26. Mrs. Janice Lowell, wife of T/S State of Maine
Chief Engineer, Roger Lowell, will raise the Merchant Marine flag. The public

Course To Prepare for Coastal Emergencies: Managing
marine-related emergencies in Maine coastal communities will be the topic of
two pilot courses to be offered by MMA at Castine and Portland. Developed in cooperation with MMA, the Maine
Emergency Management Agency, and Marine Emergency Management Consulting and
Instruction, LLC, “Command
Strategies and Tactics or Marine Emergencies” will be presented at MMA on May 21-23,
and at the Portland Water District Building on June 18-20. Designed for first responders and
representatives of portside industries and facilities, the course will address
vessel fires, hazardous materials incidents, cruise vessel emergencies, and other
incidents that may have the potential to have a major impact on a coastal

May 8 MMA to Welcome High
School Sailors, Robotics Competitors to Campus: MMA will host the Down East Fleet
Racing Championship, featuring the Maine High School Sailing state
championship, this weekend, May 10-11, 2008. Racing in Castine's
Smith’s Cove will get underway on Saturday at 11 a.m., and on Sunday at 10 a.m.
More than 70 Maine elementary and middle school students are expected to be on
campus on Saturday, May 10, to compete in the Northern Maine Robot Track
Meet sponsored by Maine Robotics.
The high energy, sports-like track meet will feature the skills of teams made up of children currently enrolled
in grades 3 to 8 who enter the competition with robots that they have
constructed to meet the challenges of several prescribed field events. The
event will be held in the Alexander Fieldhouse from 9
a.m. to 2 p.m. An opening ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Spectators are
welcome at both of these events. Monday, May

Somerville, Houston, Texas; and William Walsh, Northampton, N.H. Robert Walker of

May 1 MMA Trustees to Meet, May 2: ~The MMA Board of Trustees will hold a
regular quarterly meeting on Fri., May 2, 2008, at 4 p.m., in the Holmes
Alumni Heritage Room, located on the lower level of the Harold Alfond Student Center. Victoria Larson, Windham, Maine,
chairs the 16-member Board of Trustees. MMA 65th
Commencement, May 3: The Honorable John E. Baldacci, Governor of Maine,
will address the graduating class at MMA's 65th Commencement on Sat., May 3,
2008, at 11 a.m., in Alexander Fieldhouse.
Commencement activities will begin at 9 a.m. with the annual awards program in
Delano Auditorium, Leavitt Hall. A formal commissioning ceremony for Navy
officers will take place at 1 p.m. on the lawn in front of Leavitt Hall or, in
the event of inclement weather, in the Harold Alfond
Student Center. Training Cruise to
Set Sail May 6: The training ship, State of Maine, will depart from Castine
harbor on Tues., May 6, at approximately 7 a.m., a revised departure time
reflecting a slight change from an initial announcement about this year’s
training cruise. Well-wishers are welcomed and encouraged to view the vessel
departure from the Maine Maritime Academy waterfront, however shipboard visits
are not permitted. MMA’s annual online ship tracking and interactive web site
will be coordinated by students and staff as part of this
year’s training activities and families and friends are invited to join the
voyage by visiting www.mma.edu and following the highlighted
hyperlink. The training ship will return to its homeport on Sat., June 28.
Arrival in Castine Harbor is expected at approximately 1:30 p.m., with docking
anticipated at 2 p.m. Training cruise activity will continue in port through
Mon., June 30. Wednesday,
April 30 GRADUATION:
Reminder to seniors to be in the gym for lineup by 10:30 a.m. on
Saturday, May 3rd. This is a reminder that all

Association (PIMA) 2008 Annual Scholarship
Each year Northeast PIMA offers a scholarship to MMA students. They have decided to offer a Maine Maritime
Academy student a $1000 dollar scholarship for the 2008-2009 school year. Those that
have an interest in the Pulp & Paper Industry – or that have worked in
paper mills in Maine will be highly considered....If interested please write a letter of interest and submit to the
Financial Aid Office immediately! TOMORROW: Public Forum to Explore
Tidal Energy Project: MMA and its industry partners engaged in exploring the possibility
of establishing a Tidal Energy Device Evaluation Center (TEDEC)
in waters local to Castine, will host an open forum on Weds., April 30, 2008.
The goal of the forum is to seek and incorporate community input into the
planning process. The public discussion will be held from 7-9 p.m., in the
Harborview Room of the Harold Alfond Student Center
on the Maine Maritime Academy campus in Castine. Further information on
TEDEC, may be obtained at http://tedec.mma.edu/. The forum, convened by
Maine Senator Dennis Damon, (D-Hancock), will begin with an overview of the
proposed project. An extensive question and answer period will be

Postmaster: Are you leaving for
the summer, planning on having your mail forwarded, or getting an off-campus
residence next semester? Students, staff, and faculty who hold a post office
box at the Castine Post Office or have a rural route mailbox in Castine are
reminded to stop by the Post Office and make the necessary arrangements to have
mail forwarded. The Post Office will only hold mail for 30 days. After that it
is sent back to the sender as unclaimed. This policy applies to all
communities, so if you live in another town, contact your local Post Office for
similar assistance. Also, when returning next semester, be advised that simply
taking up residence locally does not automatically establish mail delivery to
your new physical address. You must establish mail service with your your local Post Office. For information or clarification,
Castine Postmaster Al Rollins is happy to assist you: 326-8551. BOOKSTORE: It is Book BuyBack time in the Bookstore.
