The Schooner Bowdoin was built during the winter of 1920-21.

The idea of a sailing vessel that could successfully navigate dangerous Arctic waters was first born in the mind of Donald B. MacMillan over four years earlier.

Bowdoin is of national signifigance; listed in the National Register of Historic Places, official number: 221251.

Bowdoin is currently an operating vessel, under direction of Maine Maritime Academy, moored in Castine, Maine.

Students of MMA have the unique opportunity to learn traditional sailing in an experiential environment on the schooner.
